How a Newcomer Went From Tim Hortons to a Project Manager Role in Canada (Without Applying)

Anly - Tims to Project Manager

Hundreds of job applications. Zero interviews.

That was Anie’s reality. She worked long shifts at Tim Hortons, sent resumes every day, and woke up to rejection emails every morning.

The problem wasn’t her skills. Instead, it was her strategy.

So, here’s exactly what changed, and what you can apply to your own job search in Canada.

Why Mass Applying Isn’t Working for Newcomers in 2026

Right now, the Canadian job market is more competitive than it has been in years. In fact, there are nearly 3 job seekers per vacancy in 2025, up from 2.0 in early 2024.

Because of this, fewer job postings and higher unemployment have made things harder.

At the same time, almost every resume is now built with AI. As a result, recruiters struggle to tell candidates apart.

So, companies have quietly changed how they hire. Instead of posting jobs that attract thousands of applicants, many now reach out directly to 15–20 candidates on LinkedIn.

Therefore, if your resume isn’t optimized, and your LinkedIn isn’t visible, you simply don’t exist to them.

Step 1: Fix the Resume First

At the beginning, Anie’s resume was three pages long and focused on customer service. However, she was targeting project manager roles.

That mismatch alone was costing her interviews.

So, we fixed it in week one:

  • Reduced it to one page
  • Rewrote every bullet using the XYZ format (What you did → How you did it → Result)
  • Added strong action verbs and relevant keywords
  • Aligned every bullet with her target role

At the same time, we noticed something important: she didn’t yet have enough direct experience for PM roles.

Instead of pushing her toward lower-level roles, we guided her to govvolunteer.ca to gain hands-on, relevant experience.

As a result, within weeks of adding that experience, she started getting coffee chats and interviews.

Step 2: Optimize LinkedIn So Recruiters Find You

For Anie, LinkedIn wasn’t optional; it was the turning point.

So, we focused on five key areas:

  • Profile photo: Clear, professional, face-centered
  • Headline: Target role + certifications + key skills
  • About section: Short, clear, and structured
  • Experience section: Same bullets as the resume to boost keywords
  • Skills & certifications: Fully completed

The goal is simple: when recruiters search for someone in your field, your profile should show up.

Step 3: Stop Applying. Start Cold Emailing.

This is where most newcomers hesitate. However, this step changed everything for Anie.

Cold emailing means reaching out directly to hiring managers, sharing your resume, and asking for a referral or a quick chat.

Instead of applying online, she focused only on outreach.

Because of that shift, she went from zero interviews to seven interviews in just a few weeks.

Eventually, she landed a Project Manager role she never applied for.

First, she sent a cold email. Then, she built a connection. After that, she got a referral.

During interviews, she performed so well that the company upgraded her from the coordinator role they originally planned.

They even told her her salary would increase within 6–12 months.

Her words: “My one month’s paycheck is now my one week’s paycheck.”

Individual results vary. This reflects one student’s experience.

The Last Piece: Interview Prep

Getting interviews is only part of the process. However, converting them is what really matters.

At first, Anie wasn’t passing interviews. The issue wasn’t her experience; it was how she communicated it.

So, we gave her five core questions to practice daily.

She practiced in front of a mirror, recorded herself, and received feedback.

Just 15 minutes a day made the difference.

Your Visibility Is the Problem, Not Your Skills

If you’re applying and hearing nothing, the issue isn’t your background.

Instead, it’s your visibility.

Right now, recruiters don’t review hundreds of applications; they search for candidates.

So, you need to show up where they are looking.

Fix your resume. Then, optimize LinkedIn. Finally, start cold emailing.

That’s the sequence.
